Our Mission
Well-intentioned businesses often avoid donating food or other resources for two reasons: logistical costs and concerns about potential liability. They even often pay commercial disposal services to trash otherwise-good food. The result is expensive for the business, and wasteful for the world.
We aim to fix both problems at once. CalCares helps businesses understand state and federal protections limiting liability for good faith donations, including the federal "Good Samaritan" law codified at 42 United States Code § 1791 et seq. At the same time, we undertake the logistical burden of connecting surplus resources—resources that would otherwise be destined for the trash—with people and organizations who need those resources the most.
The result is better for everyone: businesses don't pay for liquidator trash services, good food doesn't head to the trash, and people who need nourishment receive it without delay.
